God is at work in the lives of everyone around us, whether we realize it or not. At the end of March, students and staff from Southern Colorado packed into a few minivans and headed toward South Padre Island, Texas.
South Padre Island is a popular spring break destination for college students, who will travel great distances to party during their time off of school. By sending a team there for a week on mission, we were trusting that God would use their efforts to bring lost people into a relationship with himself.
Tyler and Matthias, a freshman and senior at UCCS, signed up and went on this mission trip, uncertain of what God might do. Starting spiritual conversations can often be intimidating, but these guys took a step of faith to learn and practice asking questions, listening well, and sharing the gospel with people they met.
After a few days of being partnered with Cru staff, Tyler and Matthias were paired together and ended up having a conversation with a girl sitting on the beach who moments before had been praying “God if you’re real, give me a sign.” Unaware of this, Tyler and Matthias asked if they could ask some questions about her life and thoughts about spiritual matters using a picture survey (one of Cru’s tools for evangelism: Soularium).
She responded with a dumbfounded look on her face but was eager to talk. Confused at her reaction and grateful to get to sit and have a conversation, they began asking questions.
Tyler and Matthias were shocked as she explained how they were an answer to her prayer. They shared the gospel with her, what it meant to follow Jesus, and asked her if this was a decision she wanted to make.
“Yes! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
They got to pray with her as she made the decision to trust Christ as her Lord and Savior, amazed that God could use them in that way.
As we step out in faith to share Jesus with others, Tyler and Matthias’ story shows us that God is in control and that the power of the gospel is not in the messenger, it is in the message.
