Politics at the Table Reflections:
What does it look like to give our allegiance to Jesus, unifying around him while discussing different political leanings that pursue Christ’s Kingdom agenda?
We spent the last couple months discussing this question during our Politics at the Table series. It was a transformative experience as those from all different backgrounds, cultures, races, and stages of life shared a seat at the table while learning what it means to live and love like Jesus.
Here are some of the take-aways from those who participated:
“Learning the stories of others humanized different perspectives.”
“I learned it’s a lot less scary to have healthy conversations about politics than it is to avoid the topic out of fear of a difficult conversation.”
“It got me thinking more broadly than ‘politics’ and challenged me to look at policies through the lens of living out the Kingdom of God.”
“In a small group discussion, I grew in my understanding of how much a person’s political leanings are influenced by family experiences as they were growing up.”
One unique perspective came from Marnix and Marjolien ‘t Hart, who were visiting from the Netherlands:
Our first real-life experience with the USA, during a time of political unrest, watching the presidential debate and the attempted assassination of Trump, was interesting (to say the least). But even though our family & friends were maybe concerned about us being in the USA during these times, we were actually encouraged by and felt very safe in the conversations we had about this topic.
Even though we heard a lot of stories of people being disappointed and discouraged about the USA politics, the conversations around the table gave me hope and made me feel connected. The political engagement commitments were very helpful and inspiring (although also challenging). I loved that it was emphasized all the time that Jesus calls us to be united, but not uniform. After Colorado, we visited a church in Memphis and a church in Birmingham, Alabama, and we encouraged their pastors to do a similar series because we were so enthusiastic about it. We pray that Christians in the US will continue to emphasize unity, and that the world will see us and know that we are His because of the love we have for each other.
Thanks for your ongoing support, encouragement, and prayers during our Politics at the Table series.
We’re grateful to be part of the global Church that is unified around Jesus while celebrating the uniqueness of all who are invited to sit at Jesus’s table.
