Building a Refuge in Haiti

February 24, 2016 | Written by Jason Bishop

One of the phrases that has shaped my life is, “Find out where God is moving, and then follow after Him.” On my recent trip to Haiti, it was clear to me that God is working there!

IMG_0179I can recall, like many others, watching and hearing about the devastation from the earthquake in 2010. For one of the poorest countries in the entire world, the earthquake left thousands dead, and countless more displaced and looking for a new place to live. Temporary relief was offered, but the temporary homes (which were not much more than tarps and random supplies used as shelter) ended up becoming their home for years. In a few of the villages we visited, people fled there to restart their lives in these shelters.

That is why I was blown away looking over a hill in Leveque, where Mission of Hope Haiti welcomed almost 600 families into permanent homes!

IMG_0173It was an amazing feeling to be standing there alongside Rosamund, one of the ‘village champions’ from Leveque who is working with Mission of Hope and the local church, and looking at the way God was moving there! As we were talking, he asked me to say thank you for the way we are helping the villages he and his wife and two sons live and serve in. I promised him I would, so thank you, on behalf of Rosamund, and the villages of Leveque and Minoterie.

Seeing these permanent homes in the midst of so many people still displaced, I was reminded what Paul wrote the Corinthians when he said,

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.  For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling. (2 Corinthians 5:1-2)

By building permanent homes for these families, whose homes were destroyed, we can point to the permanent home we’ll have in heaven one day with God!

JasonThrough the support of families and small groups from this church, Pulpit Rock was able to make it a reality for 10 families to move from a temporary shelter to a permanent home.

Along with that, we are excited to continue partnering with Mission of Hope by sending 30 people this summer from our church to help do the same in the village of Minoterie.

As moving as it was to see what God has done in Leveque, I cannot wait to see the way peoples’ live will be transformed through our continual support. It was clear to me that Haiti is a place close to our Father’s heart.

After having experienced the sights, sounds, and even smells of Haiti, it was the people I was able to meet and talk to that will have a lasting impact on my walk with God.
