Feeding the Homeless: A Pulpit Rock Legacy

November 10, 2015 by Pulpit Rock Staff

Did you know that for 20 years, Pulpit Rock families have been partnering with the Salvation Army New Hope shelter in the their ministry to the homeless of our city?

Currently, teams of Pulpit Rock families and friends prepare, carry in, and serve dinner for 100-150 hungry men, women and children about four times each month.

coffeeWHY?

During the week, residents of the shelter eat at the Marian House soup kitchen, but it is closed on the weekends. Since there is no kitchen at the shelter, their weekend diet consisted of cereal and milk, peanut butter and jelly.

During the 1990s, a group from Pulpit Rock responded to that need by mobilizing to provide hot weekend dinners to residents of the shelter, providing tangible care for some of “the least of these” that Jesus mentioned.

We’ve been doing it ever since.

JOIN A TEAM

Our family joined one of the PRC shelter meal teams at the invitation of a friend about 15 years ago. It was not easy to juggle the activities of our seven family members so that we could faithfully give the few hours necessary one Saturday each month. It was, however, more than worth it!

We learned to see beyond our own agenda to the needs of others. As we interacted with each resident, we were able to offer a measure of respect, dignity, and hope. And God blessed us, as promised.

We always left with hearts overflowing. Our smiles, conversation, prayers and encouragement feed their souls as the food warms their bodies.

WE NEED YOU!

We are looking for a few more committed helpers to keep our teams healthy and serving well through another year.

Could that be you? All it takes is a few hours each month.
