A couple Saturdays ago many of us spent the morning serving and loving our city. More than 3,000 volunteers from all across our city, including 200 from our very own church, joined together on 100 projects to beautify, rebuild and restore Colorado Springs.
All because we love our city.

What project did you serve with? What did the project entail?
I was on the playground clean up project over by Village 7 church. We were supposed to be painting the playground but because of the weather we ended up digging out some serious erosion that had taken place as well as digging a trench around the playground to avoid future erosion.
What was your favorite moment of the day?
It was fun to look back at the end and see the impact that the 50 or so people that were there did in just a short amount of time. It was fun to be on a completely different side of town than I live on and invest differently my time than I normally do.
Is there anything else you want to tell us about your time?
I would highly recommend CityServe. Everyone has the capacity to give 4 hours once a year to invest in the city that they live in and be the hands and feet of Jesus. It is a beautiful picture of the Kingdom coming alive from every walk of life.

Our whole small group served together at Carver Elementary, alongside a few teachers and a lot of people from another two churches. We power washed cafeteria tables, did yard work, re-raked playground gravel, cleaned inside, painted the library and made a Buddy Bench.

What project did you serve with? What did the project entail?
We served with Lutheran Family Services downtown to help clean up their water damaged basement. When we walked in the walls anad floor were pretty damaged. They asked us to clean the floors, scrape the walls, sort the clothes that had been donated that were usable and not usable, remove the water damaged rug, and straighten up their files.
What was your favorite moment of the day?
My favorite moment of the day was at the end when we got to see it finished and transformed. It looked like a whole different place!
Did you learn anything unexpected during your project?
I learned how much I didn’t know my friends in my Bible study. We’ve met to read the Bible together the last few months but working alongside them was really bonding. I gained a new respect for them and their desire to serve people.
Is there anything else you want to tell us about your time?
I think this should happen more than once a year!

We were tasked to paint at Discovery High School. It was a little challenging painting outdoors in 40+ weather but we all worked well to make sure the paint covered and the project turned out well. Discovery High School is a small alternative high school. The principal Shane Skala was supervising the event. He has a great heart for the kids who attend but stated the heartbreaking part of the jobs is that their is a high incidence of substance abuse in the families at the school which present a variety of challenges. It was also fun to get to know four new people who have a heart to serve and have their own unique stories. All in all it was a great event to leave one’s footprint and see the story that may evolve from it.
