WHAT WE BELIEVE
Statement of Faith
All of these beliefs come from our understanding of Scripture, but these truths are not just independent facts or ideas to us. They are part of a greater story into which God invites us all. This story is called the Gospel, that is the good news of Jesus Christ, his resurrection, and his love for each and every one of us. The Gospel is best lived out in the context of our relationships and our community. That is what we are endeavoring to do at Pulpit Rock Church.
The Trinity: We believe in one God, Creator of all things. God is holy, loving, perfect, and full of grace. The Trinity exists outside of time and exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These three persons are co-eternal, co-equal, and one in essence, power, and glory.
The Father: We believe in God the Father. He is the creator, source, and architect of the salvation of mankind. He is perfect in love, grace, and mercy.
The Son, Jesus Christ: We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten son, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Even though He is fully God, He humbly chose to become fully man to live a sinless life and then die on a cross so that by His blood we could be forgiven. We also believe that on the third day, He rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and now reigns at the Father’s right hand. We believe He is our Advocate and High Priest, and one day He will return to finish the work He started.
The Holy Spirit: We believe in the Holy Spirit who is fully God, equal with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit indwells each believer and empowers us by guiding, instructing, and encouraging us to live life on earth in fellowship with God.
The Bible: We believe the Holy Bible–comprising the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments–is God’s revelation of Himself to humanity, inspired by God and written by humans under His divine guidance. We affirm the Bible’s veracity in its original manuscripts. It is authoritative for faith and life, providing encouragement, guidance, comfort, and instruction for training in righteousness.
Humankind: We believe God created men and women in the image of God. We believe that all humans are spiritually dead because of their inherited sin nature and their own sin. Nevertheless, we believe one of the truest things about us is that God still loves and pursues us despite our sin. We believe those who trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and restored into a right relationship with God.
Salvation: We believe salvation is a free gift from God and is received through faith in Jesus Christ. This is not based on merit, works, or ritual. We believe the shed blood of Jesus Christ and his resurrection provide the only grounds for salvation from eternal separation from God. And we believe all who receive Jesus through faith are born of the Spirit, become children of God, and receive eternal life. We affirm the words of the Nicene Creed: “We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.”
The Church: We believe that the Church is the people of God unified and indwelt by the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. The Church is Christ’s spiritual body and is visible in the world wherever believers gather and walk with God in community.
Christian Formation: We believe the supreme task of every believer is to glorify God by living in the power of the Holy Spirit and seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Practically, this pursuit includes a commitment to spiritual growth, holy character, and sacrificial love of others.
