We had the privilege of taking our students to winter camp again this year (7th/8th Jan. 30-Feb. 1 and high school Feb. 13-15). Every year, camp is a great opportunity to spend extended time with students riding in vans, playing games, eating meals, worshipping and in conversation. This year, there was much of the same…but it felt like some things shifted for many of our students.
We’ve been in a series since January with 7th-12th graders all about what it means to living in community…loving one another, doing life together, caring for one another…etc. Sometimes, it’s easy for groups to form little clicks, especially for things like camp, but this year we noticed less of that, more inclusion, more mingling and switching up seating arrangements. That’s always nice to see, helps make sure no one is feeling isolated or left out, but even more, it creates a safe place for everyone.
That’s where this year was different for me. Our students stepped up and made everyone feel welcome and seen…and then, Saturday evening after the main session during our group time, they got raw and so real. One student shared, “I’ve been struggling with this addiction to porn. I need help and I don’t want this to be part of my life anymore.” Then another, “I’ve been vaping and I want to stop.” And they continued…shame, depression, loneliness, shallow faith…they were real, they were honest and as others shared, they leaned in, made eye contact and showed love. After group, they touched base with each other…I understand what you’re going through, let’s talk more…I’m praying for you about that. You are loved…hugs, tears…Jesus.
The next morning, as we finished the weekend with worship, they let themselves go…praising God together for His grace, His love, His work in and through them. Our God is after the hearts of our young people and we have some students in Pulpit Rock who are opening their hearts and lives to Him in powerful ways!
