We are the moms of Ask a Mom.

Throughout the past year we have shared thousands of cookies, hugs, and words of life with many UCCS students. Our partnership with CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) has allowed us to “mom” a table in the UCCS Student Center once a week for several hours, and Pulpit Rock has helped provide the cookies.

How did it start?

Ask a Mom got it’s start about eight years ago on a Florida university campus. Two women, Cathy Thompson and Connie Amon, felt God leading them to minister in the way they knew best—using their “mom skills” to share God’s love. They focus on building relationships with college students and encouraging them in their spiritual journeys.

How did Pulpit Rock get involved?

Last summer a group of Pulpit Rock moms was praying for a way to minister in the “empty nest” stage of life. We had heard the Ask a Mom stories, and approached Pulpit Rock to see if they shared our interest.

Turns out God had been preparing the way for us because incredibly the T-shirts were already printed and staff members were praying for moms to fill them!

After some awesome training and encouragement by Cathy herself, we were ready to get started.

Highlights of our first year…

  • A student with a difficult roommate situation got help with communication skills, and the issues were resolved peacefully!
  • A student with health and emotional issues was encouraged to seek help at the health center, and was making great progress!
  • Several student moms with young children have stopped by for parenting advice.
  • We’ve been privileged to pray for jobs, tests, family members, health issues.

So what now?

We have been blessed to partner with CRU—they share our heart for encouraging other students in their spiritual journey, and are a great resource!

We’ve built relationships with other campus organizations. Our weekly table was often next to one manned by the university health center, and we shared concerns about student sleep, nutrition, stress, etc. In fact, they appreciated our presence enough to invite us to their recent university health fair! That gave us the chance to interact with even more students and faculty.

We are excited to see God build on this foundation next year!

  1. I am an “almost” empty nester myself. I happened to be delivering lunch to my son, a UCCS student, today who just had knee surgery. I stopped and chatted with one of your MOMS in the red shirts! She was so sweet and and had so much joy and such a giving spirit. I was in tears(good tears) by the time I left just thinking about what a wonderful work you are doing and the great impact you are having even if in the small things. Blessings to you all as you continue this great ministry!

I am from Boulder County otherwise I would love to be involved with your ministry.

  2. I live in Kansas City Missouri. I’m an older mom, who benefited by being involved in Campus Crusade while in college. Are there any opportunities in my area for this ministry?
