ReBible Podcast

The BIBLE is filled with re words… words like redemption, renew, repent, restore, reconciliation, reform and all of those words are about returning something to its original intended state.

Some of our thinking about the bible needs that same sort “re” work, as imperfect followers of Jesus we are constantly working to understand God and his Word better, we will make mistakes along the way and so we need humility to constantly be at work reforming and reassessing our hearts and understanding to more closely reflect Jesus.

The ReBible podcast is a place to walk that out together as a community of faith, as we explain, explore and reflect on these ideas together.

Discussion Questions Ep 6 – Jesus is the Center of the Story, Not Us
  • What can happen when we use ourselves as the lens when we read the Bible?
  • How could you use ‘Him questions’ rather than ‘me questions’ as you study?
  • What freedoms does it give us to know that He is the center of the story and not us?
  • How does Jesus help us interpret parts of the Scripture he is not physically present in? What threads do you see of Jesus throughout the Old Testament?
Discussion Questions EP 5 – Our Bias and the Need for Community
  • How can we be aware of our own lens, bias or expectations of Scripture when we read it?
  • If the Bible intends to change and transform us, what can we expect in studying it?
  • What is so important about reading the Scriptures in community with others? What do we miss out on when we only read it alone?
  • Choose a chunk of Scripture and read it aloud with others this week – what discussion and other perspectives come up? How do questions continue the conversation?
Discussion Questions EP 4 – Inerrant, Authoritative and Inspired
  • The Bible is a special revelation, inspired, inerrant/infallible, and authoritative. Why is it important we understand the meanings of these words to read it?
  • We personally are none of these things – how do we mess things up if we believe our interpretation of Scripture has any of these qualities?
  • Why is humility so important to bring to the text when we read it?
Discussion Questions EP 3 –  For Our Time, But Not About Our Time
  • What do you think it means that the Bible was not written to us, but it was written for us?
  • How could learning about the historical context of books in the Bible help us to understand it more fully?
  • What could be some problems with viewing the Bible for only our current context?
  • Read a passage in the Bible and do some study on what was happening in the world during that time period. What was the culture like? What might these words have meant to the people hearing them in the moment?
Discussion Questions EP 2 – The Bible is a Library
  • Why would it matter that there are different genres in the Bible?
  • How do you read different styles of Biblical writing in certain ways?
  • Think about or read two passages in the Bible that are written in different genre styles – how does the style contribute to what God and the author want to communicate?
Discussion Questions EP 1 – What is the Purpose of Scripture?
  • What is the purpose of the Bible? How has this answer changed for you over time? How does our understanding of its purpose inform how we read it and the questions we bring to it?
  • Are there ways we can read the Bible that can cut out the work of God and the Spirit?
  • We sometimes look to the Bible to show us what to do – some better questions might be what does this reveal or expose about me? And how does this point me to Jesus and lead me into relationship with him?  Choose a passage and ask these questions of it.
